Featuring OSG's V-Series HELIOS® Drill
BVM Corp. saves an average of $1,000 per part by switching to OSG's V-Series HELIOS® Drill

Time is money. It's an old cliché that everyone knows and understands, but to what extent can it be applied in business? In manufacturing, time is often regarded as a critical factor in determining profit. If a four-and-a-half-hour job can be shortened to one-and-a-half, most people would probably consider the latter. That is why, when Luke Perusse discovered OSG's V-Series HELIOS® Drill could shorten run time by three hours, he immediately tossed away their high-speed-steel aircraft drill.

"The HELIOS® brought us huge savings," Perusse said.

Perusse is the Shop Foreman at BVM Corporation, an oilfield manufacturing company based in Denver, CO. Established in 1987, BVM has approximately 30,000 sf of production space and 45 employees. BVM specializes in rig-handling tools and is recognized by the quality and safety of their products. BVM has been producing oil rig tools for about 7 years using aircraft extension drills. With 24 holes in a spider, they have been making roughly 10 sets per year. It usually takes four-and-a-half hours to drill a set of 11/32 holes through a 8630 steel casting that is approximately 15" deep. When Perusse was about to purchase more aircraft drills, he was approached by MSC Industrial Supply Co. Metalworking Application Specialist Chester "Mac" Allsup and OSG Tap & Die, Inc. District Manager Sam Lewis.

"Mac and Sam told me about the HELIOS®," Perusse said. "The duo told me that they could replace the existing tool with a new tool that would not peck nor was it coolant fed."

The V-Series HELIOS® Drill is a high-speed-cobalt drill designed for deep-hole drilling. Designed at OSG's Global Design and Technology Center, it was introduced initially in 15D and 20D offerings in September 2008, followed by 10D in 2009.

The V-Series HELIOS® Drill features new patented technology that gives it the ability to process deep holes without the use of internal coolant supply. State-of-the-art flute design improves chip evacuation, making it feasible to drill up to 20D without pecking. By utilizing OSG's WXL coating, the V-Series HELIOS® Drill can handle a wide range of materials with up to three times greater wear resistance versus conventional coatings.

"Compared to solid carbide drills, our V-Series HELIOS® Drill is a fraction of the price," said Drew Strauchen, Vice President of Marketing and Engineering at OSG Tap and Die, Inc. "This makes it a more economically viable option, especially for those with extremely tight tooling budgets and no coolant-through machining centers."

After some careful calculations and inspections, Allsup and Lewis recommended the 20D standard HELIOS® drill to Perusse. In the beginning, Perusse was slightly skeptical because the HELIOS® drill sounded too good to be true. But as Allsup and Lewis reiterated that OSG would stand behind the performance claims if ran properly, Perusse decided to order one of the HELIOS® drills.

The return result was phenomena. BVM typically ran their aircraft drill on the Horizontal Jig Mill at 650 rpm and 0.7 ipm. OSG's HELIOS® drill was performing at 815 rpm and 5.7 ipm.

"The HELIOS® drill reduced our run time by three hours," Perusse said. "It saves us on average $1,000 per part!"

OSG's HELIOS® drills helped BVM improve their machining process and enabled them to produce more parts off the machine per day. In addition to their high performance, HELIOS® drills allow customers who do not have high-pressure coolant fed spindles to compete with shops that do, making them more competitive when bidding jobs against shops with more advanced CNC machines.

"We thought BVM would appreciate the HELIOS® drills because they do a lot of deep-hole drilling," said Allsup. "But what's more important is that they are willing to take the step to improve their machining process."
